The June 2026 edition of BIS Manak Samachar highlights the Bureau of Indian Standards' continued efforts to strengthen India's quality ecosystem through new standards, international collaborations, research initiatives, conformity assessment, and industry outreach. The newsletter showcases BIS's expanding role in promoting standardisation across sectors ranging from transportation and construction to healthcare, AYUSH, consumer safety, and MSME development.
This month's edition also focuses on India's growing participation in global standardisation activities, the publication of new Indian Standards, expansion of mandatory hallmarking districts, enhanced testing infrastructure, and multiple awareness programmes designed to improve compliance and product quality nationwide.
BIS successfully hosted the 35th Plenary and Working Group Meetings of ISO TC 20/SC 14 (Space Systems and Operations) with participation from international experts, national standards bodies, academia, and space agencies from 13 countries. The meeting reinforced India's growing influence in international standardisation, particularly in the rapidly evolving space sector.
BIS expanded mandatory gold hallmarking to five additional districts, increasing coverage to 385 districts nationwide. This initiative is aimed at improving transparency in the jewellery market while protecting consumer interests.
BIS continued expanding India's standards ecosystem by publishing new standards across sectors including AYUSH, chemicals, food, agriculture, textiles, and petroleum. One of the most significant developments was the publication of IS 19850:2026, covering ethanol-blended petrol (E22, E25, E27, and E30).
These standards support cleaner transportation, fuel efficiency, and India's transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
The 21st meeting of the TED 28 Intelligent Transport Systems Committee reviewed several important standards, including tyre pressure monitoring systems, RFID applications, and reverse parking alert systems.
BIS also invited stakeholders to participate in public consultation through wide circulation drafts, reinforcing its transparent and collaborative approach to standard development.
A major feature article highlighted BIS's efforts in standardising AYUSH systems, including Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Siddha, Unani, Sowa Rigpa, and Homoeopathy.
More than 215 Indian Standards have already been published covering medicinal plants, therapeutic procedures, wellness equipment, herbal medicines, diagnostic methods, and quality management.
BIS is also actively participating in ISO initiatives to establish international standards for Ayurveda and Yoga.
BIS expanded laboratory capabilities for testing toys and children's products while conducting several enforcement drives against products being sold without mandatory BIS certification or Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID).
Enforcement actions covered:
The BIS Research & Development Scheme continues supporting innovation through financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh per project. With more than 205 projects funded, the programme is helping develop future Indian Standards in sectors including manufacturing, construction, smart infrastructure, textiles, and heavy industry.
BIS also organised national workshops, technical seminars, and certification programmes to build industry capabilities.
BIS organised several awareness programmes across India to educate MSMEs, manufacturers, students, researchers, and industry associations about Indian Standards, Quality Control Orders (QCOs), certification procedures, and digital services.
Training sessions, seminars, and industry interactions focused on improving compliance while simplifying certification processes for businesses.
BIS is expected to continue expanding India's standardisation ecosystem by developing new Indian Standards, strengthening international collaborations, promoting digital certification processes, encouraging research-based standardisation, and increasing stakeholder participation.
Future priorities are likely to include:
The June 2026 BIS Monthly Newsletter demonstrates India's strong commitment to building a robust quality ecosystem through innovation, international collaboration, consumer protection, and industry engagement. From introducing new standards and strengthening conformity assessment to expanding hallmarking and promoting research, BIS continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing product quality, supporting businesses, and aligning Indian industries with global best practices. These initiatives are expected to contribute significantly to safer products, stronger consumer trust, improved industrial competitiveness, and sustainable economic growth.
The June 2026 BIS Monthly Newsletter highlights several important developments, including the expansion of mandatory gold hallmarking to 385 districts, publication of new Indian Standards, advancements in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), enhanced testing facilities for toys and children's products, BIS R&D initiatives, AYUSH standardisation, international standardisation meetings, and nationwide MSME awareness programmes.
The expansion of mandatory gold hallmarking to 385 districts strengthens consumer protection by ensuring the authenticity and purity of gold jewellery. It also improves transparency in the jewellery market, encourages compliance among jewellers, and enhances consumer confidence in purchasing hallmarked gold products.
One of the key developments was the publication of IS 19850:2026, which specifies requirements for higher ethanol-blended petrol (E22, E25, E27, and E30) used in positive ignition engine vehicles. In addition, BIS released several new standards across sectors such as AYUSH, textiles, food & agriculture, chemicals, petroleum, and traditional medicine to support quality, sustainability, and industrial growth.
The initiatives announced in the newsletter help industries and MSMEs by promoting better product quality, easier compliance with Indian Standards, improved access to BIS certification information, enhanced research opportunities through the BIS R&D Scheme, and participation in awareness programmes, workshops, and technical seminars. These efforts improve competitiveness, market access, and consumer trust.
BIS continues to focus on strengthening India's quality infrastructure by developing new Indian Standards, encouraging research and innovation, expanding international collaborations, improving conformity assessment systems, promoting digital certification processes, supporting sustainable manufacturing, and increasing stakeholder participation in standardisation activities.
