How to Check a BIS Certificate or Licence Online (Step-by-Step)

Checking a BIS certificate online takes a few minutes once you know which scheme the product falls under. BIS runs separate registers for its schemes, so the first step is always to identify whether you are looking at an ISI Mark licence, a Foreign Manufacturer (FMCS) licence or a CRS registration. The sections below walk through each check, what the record should show, and what to do when nothing comes up.

Step 1: Find the licence or registration number on the product

BIS-certified products carry the certification mark together with a unique number. Which number you see tells you which register to search:

• ISI Mark (Scheme I) and FMCS licences: the ISI logo with the licence number printed as CM/L-XXXXXXX, usually on the product, nameplate or packaging.
• CRS (Scheme II, mainly electronics and IT products): the Standard Mark with the registration number printed as R-XXXXXXXX, typically on the rating label or packaging.
• If you only have a certificate or licence copy from a supplier, the number is on the first page of that document, along with the Indian Standard (IS) number it was granted against.

Step 2: Check an ISI Mark or FMCS licence (CM/L number) on manakonline

Open the licence report page on the Manak Online portal, manakonline.in/MANAK/ApplicationLicenceRelatedrpt. This is the portal through which all ISI Mark and FMCS licences are granted and renewed. On the report page, enter the CM/L number and run the search. You can also search by the manufacturer's name, the product or the IS number if the licence number is unreadable. The result page shows the licensee's name and factory address, the IS number, the brand and the products or varieties covered, the date of grant and the validity date.

Step 3: Check a CRS registration (R-number) on the CRS portal

Electronics, IT, solar, battery and similar products are registered under the Compulsory Registration Scheme rather than licensed. Open crsbis.in and use the registered manufacturers or product search, then enter the R-number, brand or model. A valid record lists the manufacturer and its factory address, the Indian brand owner or authorised Indian representative (for foreign manufacturers), the brand, the model numbers and series covered, the IS number and the registration status. Because CRS registrations are model-specific, confirm that the exact model on your product appears in the record and is not merely similar.

Step 4: Read the status and validity correctly

Every record carries a status. Treat it as follows:

• Valid / Operative: the licence or registration is active. Still check that the validity date has not passed and that your product model and IS number match.
• Suspended: BIS has temporarily withdrawn the right to use the mark, usually after a failed surveillance test or an unpaid fee. Products marked during suspension are non-compliant.
• Cancelled / Expired / Withdrawn: the licence no longer exists. The mark on the product is not valid even if it was printed before the cancellation.
• No record found: re-check the number for typos, try searching by brand or IS number, and ask the seller for the official grant letter. A mark with no matching entry in the BIS database is not proof of certification.

What to do if the certificate does not match the product

A certificate only covers the licensee, brand, models and standard written on it. If the record names a different manufacturer, a different model or a different IS number, the product is effectively uncertified. For imports, Customs clears consignments against the IS number and model on the registration, so a mismatch can hold up the shipment. Buyers and tender evaluators should save or print the online verification result and file it with the supplier's certificate copy. Manufacturers adding new models or changing critical components must get the licence or registration updated before dispatch, because the online record is what BIS and Customs will check.
